Observation Narrative
An extensive back-swamp, about 100 m east of the main channel of Seacorrie Swamp in the newly established Big Woods State Forest. Baldcypress knees from ca. 0.5 to 1.3 m tall are locally abundant. The forest is quite mature, with dominant Taxodium and Nyssa aquatica ranging up to 112 cm DBH in a multi-age structure. The shrub and herb strata are patchy to sparse. This stand is located ca. 3.0 km downstream from both plots (SUSS015, SUSS016) sampled in the headwaters branches of Seacorrie Swamp, and differs dramatically from them in the prevalence of Nyssa aquatica (vs. Nyssa biflora) and the absence of acid-loving shrubs such as Clethra alnifolia, Viburnum nudum, and Arundinaria tecta.
